The primary objectives of this book are three fold: 1. To develop a working knowledge of the mud motor 2. To develop procedures and guidelines so that mud motor can be used efficiently within the performance envelop and 3. To develop a clear understanding of the operating principle so that the drilling system can be optimized. Illustrative examples are provided as and when appropriate. Throughout the book we have maintained the engineering perspective related to well engineering aspects.

The present book is devoted to the study of the deep Earth’s interior structure, one of the most important problems of Earth sciences today. The drilling of the Kola superdeep well inaugurated a new stage in the study of the Precambrian continental crust. The well was sunk in the northeastern part of the Baltic Shield, in an area where the Precambrian ore-bearing structures, typical of the ancient platform basements, are in juxtaposition with each other. To the present the well has been drilled to a depth of 12 km, has traversed the full thickness of the Proterozoic complex and a considerable part of the Archean stratum, and is still be ing worked on. This book reviews the principal results of investigations to a depth of 11,600 m; these are described in three sections: geology, geophysics, and drilling. The book begins with a general review of the history, the present state of knowledge, and trends of further investigations in the field of study of the Earth’s interior and superdeep drilling. The first section of the book considers the geology of the vicinity of the Kola superdeep well and describes its geological section based on a detailed examination both of the cores and the near-borehole area.
“Transport Phenomena” has been revised to include deeper and more extensive coverage of heat transfer, enlarged discussion of dimensional analysis, a new chapter on flow of polymers, systematic discussions of convective momentum, and energy. Topics also include mass transport, momentum transport and energy transport, which are presented at three different scales: molecular, microscopic and macroscopic. If this is your first look at Transport Phenomena you’ll quickly learn that its balanced introduction to the subject of transport phenomena is the foundation of its long-standing success.

The book presents well planning procedures for problem wells. These include fracture gradients; how and why to set casing at certain depths; casing design to control kicks, stuck pipe, and lost circulation, and abnormal presure detection. An expanded version of the first manual approved by the United States Geological Survey, the book is complete with tables, charts, graphs, and an extensive section on hydrogen sulfide drilling. Most importantly, Well Control Problems and Solutions is written by a man who has been there – who had “to do it when it counted.”
