Description

This is third book in the series of Solutions and Applications from Halliburton devoted to the advancement of education in drilling technology. The previous book is Horizontal Drilling – Solution and Applications.

Extended reach drilling (ERD) technology has advanced significantly over the past decade and helped to unlock uneconomic resources around the world and to maximize the pay zone in the reservoir from just one well. ERD wells are generally defined that the ratio of measured depth (MD) and true vertical depth (TVD) is at least 2:1. With such long horizontal lengths, ERD wells tend to have challenges such as wellbore stability, hole cleaning, and torque and drag. Even though ERD technology has advanced, experience and education still matters.  This up to date book reference provides an overview of the major elements of ERD and a summary of recent advancements. It should be useful for anyone in the drilling community either directly or indirectly involved in the construction of ERD wells.

Topics covered in this book are:

  • ERD Overview
  • Rock Mechanics in Well Construction
  • Formation Pressures
  • Well Design
  • Well Paths
  • Drilling Hydraulics
  • Drillstring Mechanics
  • Well Control
  • Casing Design
  • Casing Wear
